How to Replace Door Handles

Door window handles replacement are a key part of the decor of your home. A new handle can bring your home's decor and interior up-to-date.

Over time your knobs for your doors can begin to feel stiff or even break. These are indications that it's time to change the knobs. This guide will help choose the best door handle replacement door Handles for your home.

Door Knobs

Door handles can enhance the appearance of your home, while making it easier for people to open and close doors. They come in a variety of colors, finishes, and types to complement your decor. If yours are starting to show signs of wear or simply require an upgrade, replacing them is relatively simple and can be completed in a few steps.

You must locate the spindle, or shaft through which the knob is inserted to the door. Some knobs have a small opening that you can access with a screwdriver for removal of the set screws that keep the handle in place. Some have a small slot or hole that you can use a flathead screwdriver to press on a spring-activated pin, also known as a detent. The pin opens the latch mechanism and allows you pull or push the knob.

Once you have the spindle, or shaft in your hands Remove the knob and replace it. Make sure you align it correctly and test to see that the latch works properly before tightening the new set screws.

After replacing the knob, place the latch rod over the hole on the door. Lock it in place using the rod system on the second knob. Make sure that the holes are in alignment, then tighten the screws for the latch plate.

Some people opt for a smooth or brushed metal finish for their double glazed door handle hardware to create an elegant, modern look that complements other furniture in their homes. Some prefer a rustic style that goes well with farmhouse-styled rooms. If you have members of your household who are unable to move, you may be interested in a rim lock or lever-style door knobs that require less pressure to operate.

Other factors are being taken into consideration more and more in the design of door handles. Accessibility and control of infections have been key issues in the development of new designs for handles. For instance, some can be operated using an arm.

Latch

The latch that holds your door handle open will wear out due to age and use. The replacement door handles of the latch to make room for an entirely new handle can be an easy DIY task and will make a significant difference in the way your door opens and closes.

Depending on what kind of handle you choose the latch can be a separate part or a part of the knob. In either case, the same process for removing and installing is applicable. It's easy to remove the old latch, especially in the case of a door handle with a "magic" button. Located on the side of the knob, this little pressure-slot is what you need to press to pull the latch out of the handle and off of the latching mechanism.

If your handle doesn't have this magic button you'll need to remove the cover plates that are placed over the latch plate. These are usually rectangular or circular and can be removed using a screwdriver to pull them off the handle. Some have a small hole in them where you can slide your screwdriver through, while others simply snap off.

Then, unscrew the machine screws that hold the plate's inner and latch to the door handle. These are the screws with a sharp point and you'll have to store them in a safe location to reuse them in later steps. After these screws are removed you can pull the latch plate and mechanism out of the hole in the door and place it in a safe place.

Then you can begin to install the new latch. Insert the latch plate into the door hole and secure it using the hardware supplied. Make sure that the square pin on the inside of the latch is facing the latching mechanism inside the handle, and that it lines up with the other screw chambers of the door handle. Then, secure the exterior latch plate using the screws supplied.

Strike Plate

One of the most common reasons for replacing a door handle is because it feels loose or doesn't lock properly. This is often caused by incorrectly aligned parts in the latching mechanism, such as a strike plate that's too small or has moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb as time passes. This project allows you replace your old strikeplate with an extended one, which will provide more security for your external door handles and locks and keep it closed.

Apply a lipstick or another marking material on the bolt that you are using to determine if it's the strike plate. Close the door, and then try to latch it. If the mark is located below the strike plate's hole, it means that the door won't latch due to the fact that the plate is too short. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole the strikeplate may have been moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb.

Depending on the door you have You may be able to install the new strike plate in the door over the old one, using the screws that come with it. It is possible that you will need to drill holes first and then chisel a bit of wood to ensure a perfect fit. If this is the case, you must be careful not to chisel too hard or you'll damage the integrity of your doorjamb.

Installing a brand new box-style strike plate will give the lock a stronger hold on the doors and will require more force to open them. It usually requires two larger screws to anchor the strike plate to the door frame. It is necessary remove the old strike plate, then drill and chisel the wood to create space for the new one.

This difficult-to-find strike plate is made of solid brass and comes with a heavy-duty thickness. It's made to be used on antique rim locks. It comes with wood screws and machine screws, which means you'll have the correct hardware for the job. Just remember that wood screws have a sharp tip, while the machine screws are more blunt.Window-Repairs.-150x150.jpg
