Buying a Pram Newborn
Parents and caregivers can depend on prams and pushchairs that can be multi-functional and versatile. They are the co-pilots for your child's new journey.
A pram newborn is a must for newborns and babies and has the most solid, sturdy carrycot with soft and secure walls.
A pram comes with a bassinet, however it can be converted into a stroller once the baby is ready.
Safety
Newborns are incredibly fragile and should be kept as safe as is possible. Purchasing a stroller or pram with safety features will ensure that your baby is secure and secure while traveling. A
twin stroller or pram should include a break that is working, a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and a crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Check that your chosen pram meets these standards before you purchase.
Find a pram that allows your infant to ride in the recommended lying flat position. This position helps support the baby and helps prevent an unintentionally dangerous spinal curve that could cause spinal issues. It also reduces the risk of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome) or asphyxiation, by keeping the airways free. Most prams that can be used from birth will have an infant seat that can recline into a lie-flat pram position for younger babies and then transform into a pushchair unit for older children.
The suspension of the pram is crucial because it affects the smoothness of the ride. A pram that has many suspensions is likely to cost more but it may be worth the cost of this feature if you intend on using your pram everyday for a couple of years or longer.
Always read the instructions and read the warning labels on your
pram for newborn or stroller. When not in use, park your pram away from potential dangers like bicycles, traffic or other people. Also, you should remove any bags or other items from the handles as they can cause your baby to get caught or suffocate.
A stroller or pram should not be left alone with a child in it, even if they are asleep. They can get wriggling and become trapped or the pram could be thrown away and the child could be injured. It's not recommended to hang bags or other objects from the handles because they could fall and hit your baby in the head.
Comfort
Having the option of lie flat seating is an absolute essential for infants as it promotes better back and lung development. A lot of prams come with a cocoon or carrycot that creates a warm nest-like space for your baby and can be easily removed from the frame. Some seats, like the bucket-style seat found on the egg2, don't recline completely flat, but offer a comfortable ride for your child.
Some
prams also have a separate bassinet, newborn inset or stroller seat so you can easily switch between sleeping and sitting modes according to your baby's requirements. This is often referred to as a "travel system" and is the first setup you should test out with your baby.
Choose a stroller with two shoulder straps (ideally cushioned) and a sturdy five-point safety harness that fits your child's body securely. Check that there are no gaps or loose places where fingers could be trapped. Also, make sure that the buckles are simple for older children to operate. It's also worth considering whether you'd like a parent facing pram or not. It's great to watch your child, and also helps them feel reassured by the familiarity of their parents.
Some
prams for sale, like the Graco Near2Me, come with an awesome raise and lower function that allows your baby to come up to your face at the touch of an button, which our parent testers loved! This is a great way to stay connected to your baby, especially when they are asleep. If you're looking for a travel system, make sure to check whether the frame is compatible with the car capsule you've chosen to avoid the need to wake them up every time you're changing between car, pram and back again.
Convenience
When buying a pram newborn it is crucial to think about your baby's transport needs. Some prams include the option of a carrycot or bassinet which allows your baby to be laid flat (essential for their spinal development and breathing) while others have a seat that can recline to a lie-flat position. It is also important to know the other accessories included in the pram, such as a footmuff and changing bag. These are essential for keeping your baby warm when it is cold.
It's important to note that some strollers and
prams can be transformed into travel systems allowing you to connect a car capsule to the frame via adaptors so that you can transfer your child between the car and the pushchair without having to awake them. These are great when you have a busy schedule or you don't have enough space your car boot to fit the pram. However, you should keep in mind that you'll need wait until your child is old enough to sit up on their own before you convert them from a car capsule into the pushchair.
Another feature you may want to keep an eye on is the possibility of raising and lowering the infant's seat from a low to a high setting, which helps maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you, which our parent tester found was very useful for her 10-month old boy! One example is the Graco Near2Me that allows your child to glide up' to you with the touch of an button.
Make sure that your
pram newborn has a sturdy base with wheels that are able to handle potholes and bumps. Also, make sure you can fold it up easily and make sure the safety harness is functional that fits comfortably and securely (five-point instead of three-point) and is adjustable as your child grows. It should be possible to store shopping bags and changing bags beneath the pram (but be aware that too much weight could cause it to tip over). If you're not sure what model to go with, try out a variety of models at the local retailer.
